TEHRAN, IRAN—As groups of families and others gathered Sunday evening at cafes around Niloofar Square—a middle-class area in eastern Tehran—after breaking their fast for Ramadan, a series of explosions struck the area, leveling several buildings and killing over 20 people, according to witnesses at the scene and later reports from local news sources.

Witnesses who spoke to Drop Site said two explosions hit the area—a smaller strike in the vicinity, followed by a larger one that devastated much of the neighborhood, a tactic known as a “double tap” strike that is used to inflict maximum casualties.

Videos of the immediate aftermath of the attack showed several individuals dead and wounded as well as massive destruction on the street outside. In Cafe Ahla, next to the square, blood and debris soaked the floors. Several patrons who had been sitting there when the attack struck could be seen dead on the floor or with their mutilated bodies still sprawled across their seats.

Double taps are designed to kill civilians, then kill responders.

Fucking war crime.

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 25 points 1 day ago

That's fucked up. Just targeting civilians like any other mad dictator. No pretense of going after military targets.

I guess this is what hegseth meant by "no stupid rules of engagement." Just unmitigated war crimes, in plain view...

[–] TerdFerguson@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago

I recall Trump was bestowed the FIFA Award of Peace. There was a gold trophy and award ceremony and everything.

Who on Earth could have foreseen such a reversal?

[–] Jeremylikesbourbon@sopuli.xyz 102 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Oh, good. The US and Israel are deliberately targeting civilians during a holy period. This won't come back to bite the US at all.

[–] thethrilloftime69@feddit.online 51 points 2 days ago (4 children)

It's like they have zero idea what caused 9/11 in the first place.

[–] technocrit@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago)

The CIA & Israel

[–] hector@lemmy.today 16 points 1 day ago

They want nothing more than another 9/11 as an excuse to do some military adventurism, the project 2025 assholes to be clear, the president is their bitch, and Israel's obviously.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 day ago

I remember 9/11 and the TV interviews on the street. People had NO IDEA why terrorists would fly planes into US buildings. "Irrational" and "Crazy".

[–] Zink@programming.dev 14 points 1 day ago

The fuckers driving this stuff are so mustache-twirling stupidly evil that they are probably doing it on purpose to ensure that part of their legacy is that the next generation can be convinced to treat entire nations' worth of people as violent animals.

[–] mastertigurius@lemmy.world 149 points 2 days ago (7 children)

Known "tactic" previously employed by the Israelis in Palestine, as well as by Assad in Syria, and by many other mindless butchers. They're not interested in mission objectives or the safety of the world, they just want to watch their enemies burn. And some keyboard warriors in Europe and the US cheer this evil on. What has the world come to?

[–] borkborkbork@piefed.social 34 points 2 days ago

yeah the russians really love this shit on ukraine first responders.

it's the calling card of a coward leading a coward society.

[–] Mihies@programming.dev 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Not just keyboard warriors, Germany enabled logistics merrily.

[–] Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 day ago

Well, Germany is pretty big on Genocide against "lesser" races, and you don't need to read much of their Press to figure out Muslims are a "lesser" race in their eyes.

Hegseth will kill anyone anywhere he wants with no consideration for anything but winning whatever the fuck he thinks he winning.

[–] titanicx@lemmy.zip 7 points 1 day ago

His place in history. The butcher of Theran

[–] AcidiclyBasicGlitch@sh.itjust.works 74 points 2 days ago (8 children)

And we're still claiming to be doing this because the Iranian people were stuck living under a murderous and repressive regime? Or has he just dropped the act?

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 13 points 1 day ago (2 children)

They're now saying it's because of Armageddon.

I wish I was joking.

[–] technocrit@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 6 hours ago

Can we fastforward to the part where the christian fascists and the zios turn on each other?

Yeah just saw that... Oh holy fuck

tonight radio-canada (the french-speaking counterpart to the CBC) was interviewing a lot of people from Iran, and one of the questions the interviewer asked was "so, with Khamenei dead, do you think people will go to the streets to protest their government and bring about regime change?" to which the interviewee just answered "no people are hiding and fleeing, Tehran is being bombed!"

so idk about the usa but canadian state media certainly seems to want to spin it as an act of liberation 🤮

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago

“no people are hiding and fleeing, Tehran is being bombed!”

The same people who marched in Toronto begging Trump to invade Iran carrying King Pahlavi signs?

Help is on the way.

[–] SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Right now everyone in the resistance is saying to stay inside while the bombing campaign is happening. They will wait for the signal to start the uprising. Because obviously taking to the streets when there's a bombing campaign happening is a really dumb thing to do.

Consider that this site might not be giving you all of the information about what's happening in Iran.

No way to know how many will take to the streets when they're told "it's time". Last time it was millions. The regime machine gunned down tens of thousands, bodies piled up in the streets, really horrific. This time I'd guess the resistance is going to have weapons air dropped to them and some drone support and intel. Should even things up.

There are very few people in Iran that don't know someone that was executed by the regime and the IRGC is being decimated. If the members of the IRGC were smart, they'd get out while they can, though I don't know who would take them. I suppose Russia is always looking for some more criminals to send to the front lines.

Best of luck to the resistance when the time comes.

[–] hector@lemmy.today 4 points 1 day ago

Sounds like propaganda playing us. Piss off, all you are going to do is get these people killed as they rally around the flag.

[–] michaelmrose@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

They aren't here for regime change they are here for PR points and to distract from domestic problems.

A) They aren't going to ever tell you it's time because your needs never meant anything to them

B) There will be no weapons air dropped to you because your revolution is a non-goal for them.

C) The remaining military is still going to be mostly alive and capable of machine gunning you down again

D) The new leader will be as bad as the old in fact it will probably be one of his deputies who have already been largely running the show

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Hegseth already said it was about advancing US interests. But he might have been drunk.

[–] T00l_shed@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

When is he not drunk?

[–] Aceticon@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Well, strictly speaking the dead are now free from the Iranian Regime.

I mean, if you look at the list of all the nations Trump started wars with or authorized attacks in, he's clearly big on bringing Peace ... Of The Grave.

[–] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 day ago

But the plan is to install their bitch Pahlavi back as Shah, resetting the cycle back to the 1970s. Good time to be in the gold toilets and toilet accessories business.

[–] SattaRIP@lemmy.blahaj.zone 15 points 2 days ago

There are Iranian grifters with relatively large followings (they do artificially inlfate their numbers though) among the diaspora still making this claim. When they talk I just hear: "Bomb my family harder , Daddy!"

Well, Pete did say the US was no longer going to be following those pesky "rules of engagement" anymore. I guess this is what he meant.

[–] Jeremylikesbourbon@sopuli.xyz 23 points 2 days ago (1 children)

You mean Pete "the famously anti-Muslim Christo fascist who sees himself as a modern day crusader and proud infidel " hegseth? He's gotta get a better nickname

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 6 points 1 day ago

It's even more pathetic because Persia was never christian, so what kind of crusade is this even supposed to be?

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 23 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Nope, Americans have been doing double tapping for a while. Unironically thanks Obama.

[–] sveltecider@lemmy.ca 17 points 2 days ago

And Israel too.

[–] silverneedle@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The USA need a drastic change. Preferably enacted by the bottom-most trench of society.

excuse me but if you want me to enact changes i need all kinds of specific assurances that you are not prepared to give

[–] IndustryStandard@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

They did actually. A few pretty large ones. But there was zero coverage of them in the news. Wonder why...

[–] FoxyFerengi@startrek.website 12 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I'm an idiot that doesn't understand facial expressions. What is this meant to convey? Or is it meant to be a commentary on many Americans being too large and sick to worry about what the government is doing to people?

[–] Lodespawn@aussie.zone 23 points 2 days ago

As well as being too large and sick to do anything about what the government is doing, the photo is supposed to convey that they also look sad (teary eyes) and hopeless (distant gaze despite being close to camera and faint smile that isn't really a smile).

[–] Gsus4@mander.xyz 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Aren't these the people the shag wanted to fight for him against the IRGC?

[–] ParadoxSeahorse@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I would play a game of

shag / fight / IRGC

  • Shag → Iran
  • Fight → Israel
  • IRGC → America
[–] Gsus4@mander.xyz 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] ParadoxSeahorse@lemmy.world 2 points 22 hours ago

Yeah ikr but I love a shag
