China’s ambitious Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is now mired in a mounting debt crisis, threatening the foundations of Beijing’s flagship global strategy. Infrastructure projects across Southeast Asia and Africa, financed by Chinese capital, are struggling even to meet interest payments, pushing China’s outstanding overseas debt past $1 trillion. Experts warn that if China’s loan-based diplomacy falters alongside the United States’ retreat from international aid, the global development finance system could face systemic disruption.

[...]

Launched in 2013 under President Xi Jinping, the Belt and Road Initiative sought to build a “New Silk Road” through highways, railways, ports, dams, and power plants across the developing world. More than 140 countries across Asia, Europe, and Africa have joined. In its early phase, China—through institutions like the CDB—was seen as a generous financier, offering loans without stringent conditions on governance or human rights. Yet uncontrolled lending has since fueled debt explosions in many nations, reviving allegations of Beijing’s “debt-trap diplomacy.”

Developing nations now owe China at least $1.1 trillion in outstanding obligations. Sri Lanka’s Hambantota Port and Kenya’s Standard Gauge Railway have become symbols of unsustainable debt and opaque lease agreements, while Zambia and Ghana both defaulted in 2020. Twelve African nations, including Kenya, are currently facing similar debt distress. Kenya’s so-called “Railway to Nowhere”—abandoned mid-construction in a cornfield after Chinese funding dried up—has come to epitomize the perils of overreliance on Beijing’s credit.

China’s own financial vulnerabilities are deepening. According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the country’s total social financing reached 309% of GDP in the first half of this year, a 6-point jump in just six months. The IMF noted that over half of the global debt-to-GDP increase since 2008 originated from China. Meanwhile, Beijing’s strategic alliances are weakening: Russia, a key BRI partner, has seen its national capacity eroded by the prolonged war in Ukraine. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi recently acknowledged that “a Russian defeat would shift America’s strategic focus directly onto China,” underscoring Beijing’s growing diplomatic and security dilemma.

I followed YouTube videos and all my domain points to is "server not found." My domain is through Cloudflare. My server's ports have been opened at the router.

Proxy Host Settings: Domain name: newly.registered.domain Scheme: http (I've tried https too) Forward hostname/IP: local.server.ip.v4 Forward port: jelly_port Access list: Publicly accessible SSL: *.newly.registered.domain

I'd love to share my certificate info, but I don't see a way to do that...but I set up the DNS thingy with a Cloudflare API token. I remember typing in my server's public IP here too. Took many tries, but it finally accepted the settings as valid.

So what am I missing to get a reverse proxy? I thought it was supposed to work after all of that.

I've been trying to get this going for so long that it just feels like I'm beating my head against the wall until it randomly works, ya know?

Michael Burry is sounding an awful lot like the investor [Jim Chanos] who shorted Enron.

He estimated that Meta, Google, Oracle, Microsoft, and Amazon — five hyperscalers and some of the biggest names in the AI trade — would "understate depreciation" by around $176 billion between 2026 and 2028.

"But it gets worse. More detail coming November 25th," he added.

The truce broke down this week after a Thai soldier lost a leg to a landmine blast, prompting Thailand’s PM to say the peace deal was ‘now over’

One person has been killed by gunfire along the Thai-Cambodia border as conflict heats up between the two nations days after a Trump-backed ceasefire agreement has broken down.

Fighting erupted between Thai and Cambodian troops over five days in July, with 43 people killed and 300,000 displaced in the worst fighting along the border in a decade. Donald Trump oversaw the signing of a ceasefire agreement between the two nations in Malaysia this October, after the US president previously threatened to withhold trade privileges from the two countries unless they stopped fighting.

But the newly signed truce has been shaky since Monday, when a Thai solder patrolling the border lost a foot in a landmine explosion, according to Thai authorities. Thailand blamed Cambodia for the blast, alleged the landmine was freshly laid, and announced it was suspending the terms of the deal.

The verdict awarded to the family of Shikha Garg is the first in the dozens of lawsuits filed after two plane crashes in Ethiopia and Indonesia that killed a combined 346 people.

A jury in federal court in Chicago ordered Boeing on Wednesday to pay more than $28 million to the family of a United Nations environmental worker who was killed in the 2019 crash of a 737 MAX jet in Ethiopia.

The verdict awarded to the family of Shikha Garg is the first in the dozens of lawsuits filed in the wake of that crash and another in Indonesia in 2018, which combined killed 346 people.

Under a deal between the parties struck on Wednesday morning, Garg’s family will receive $35.85 million — the full verdict amount plus 26% interest — and Boeing will not appeal, according to attorneys for the family.

The European Union has called for a bloc-wide handling fee on small packages ordered online from platforms such as Shein, Temu and Alibaba to be imposed in early 2026, over two years earlier than scheduled, in a bid to crack down on billions of cheap Chinese imports each year, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday, citing a letter from trade commissioner Maros Sefcovic to EU finance ministers.

The European Commission urged EU finance ministers meeting on Thursday to agree the faster implementation to protect domestic retailers from unfair competition, the report said.

I mean, either way, they'll spin it as 'bad'

During the Cold War the anti communist ideological framework could transform any data about existing communist societies into hostile evidence. If Soviets refused to negotiate a point they were intransigent and belligerent; if they appeared willing to make concessions, this was but a skillful ploy to put us off guard. By opposing arms limitations they would have demonstrated their aggressive intent; but when in fact they supported most armaments treaties it was because they were mendacious and manipulative. If the churches in the USSR were empty this demonstrated that religion was suppressed; but if the churches were full this ment the people were rejecting the regime’s atheistic ideology. If the workers went on strike (as happened on infrequent occasions) this was evidence of their alienation from the collectivist system. If they didn’t go on strike it was because they were intimidated and lacked freedom. A scarcity of consumer goods demonstrated failure of the economic system; and improvement in consumer goods only meant that the leaders were attempting to placate a restive population and so maintain a firmer hold over them. If communist in the US played an important role struggling for the rights of workers, the poor, African Americans, women, and others this was only a their guileful way of gathering support among disenfranchised groups and aging power for themselves. How one gained power by fighting for powerless groups was never explained. What we are dealing with is an unfalsefiable orthodoxy so assiduously marketed by the ruling interests that it affected people across the political spectrum.”

I am attempting to set up a little PhpMyAdmin host in a LXC container running Devuan 6 (based on Debian 13) and I am running into problems with the setup script run by apt install, which I believe is actually dbconfig-mysql making its own set of debconf style prompts.

This is for my homelab, and my MariaDB server has self-signed SSL certs. The problem is that I can't figure out either of the following:

  • how to have the dbconfig-mysql setup procedure not verify SSL certs
  • how to manually run the portion of the procedure which sets up a database for PhpMyAdmin in order to completely work around the dbconfig-mysql setup process

Regarding the former issue, in /etc/mysql/mariadb.conf.d/50-client.cnf I set

[client]
ssl-verify-server-cert = off

and

[client-mariadb]
disable-ssl-verify-server-cert

but this doesn't affect the setup or dpkg-reconfigure process for PhpMyAdmin.

Regarding the second issue, I'm just stumped.

Any hints would be appreciated!

edit: changed dbconfig-common to dbconfig-mysql
