Hell, I detected a sharp acceleration in global warming 🥵

Color me shocked.

Utah, now, is where Arizona was 20 years ago. We barely had any snow this last winter. I did not need to shovel my driveway at all.

Hey! This is at least the tenth time I've seen this headline in the last twenty years!

[–] Tattorack@lemmy.world 1 points 6 hours ago

And still nobody is listening. Earth only keeps warming more rapidly.

Yay we're all going to die of heat death

[–] Tattorack@lemmy.world 1 points 6 hours ago

Not the heat death I was hoping to die in.

Unfortunately the problem with global warming is that it happens very slowly over time. Scientists were warning us of the impacts of global warming for at least a decade but we have somehow prioritized the short term gains and now we and our children will bear the fruits of our negligence.

Scientists have warned us since the 80s - I can tell you that, I was there.

[–] benjirenji@slrpnk.net 5 points 11 hours ago

Yup, I was a small kid when my dad told me about it and he wasn't even a scientist, just a teacher. We've known for a long time. Ignorance is no excuse.

Scientists were warning us of the impacts of global warming for at least a decade

They've been warning us with some urgency since at least the 1970s. There were concerns published about it in the late 19th century. By the early 1990s the warnings were loud and clear for everyone to hear.

COAL CONSUMPTION AFFECTING CLIMATE. The furnaces of the world are now burning about 2,000,000,000 tons of coal a year. When this is burned, uniting with oxygen, it adds about 7,000,000,000 tons of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere yearly. This tends to make the air a more effective blanket for the earth and to raise its temperature. The effect may be considerable in a few centuries.

There were cartoons about it in the 1900s, people had an idea about it pretty early on when rivers stopped freezing suddenly.
