Oh so Singapore is controlled by baby bibi too

[–] Malyca@lemmy.zip 7 points 2 days ago

I doubt it actually, they're just real serious about their crazy laws and there's a crazy law about no foreign flags.

Thank God, I've been worried about a massive attack coming from Singapore for decades now. I'm so glad their nation decided to support Palestine instead of invading us.

Cuz ya know, if there's one thing Singapore is touchy about considering its long historical ties with the Middle East, it's Palestine and the fate of Jews and Arabs there.

Honestly, what do they care? Don't they have other things to worry about on the other side of the planet?

[–] theacharnian@lemmy.ca 125 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (36 children)

They care about enforcing censorship and keeping a lid on "politics" disrupting "social harmony". Once again Palestine is an issue that unearths the deeper fractures and contradictions in a society.

[–] RustySharp@programming.dev 38 points 4 days ago

Also, guess which middle eastern country regularly sends their officers to train the Singaporean military? Hint: it's not Palestine

Well, theres this really insane military power that they're close trading partners with that really cares about their little ethnostate vassal.

Every time something like this happens we need a map with a country that changes color

I love Singapore, but I have a question. Would you ban a music band, if they waved:

  • 🇺🇸
  • 🇷🇺
  • 🇮🇱
  • 🇹🇼
  • 🇺🇦

Asking for a friend.

[–] SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca 44 points 4 days ago (2 children)

According to the article, yes:

The decision is tied to Singapore’s policies on public speech, which prohibit publicly displaying foreign national emblems without a permit or exemption.

You can freely wave the flag of Singapore in Singapore, but for any other national flag, there could be a problem if you don't get permission first.

There's just a lot of weird laws in Singapore.

[–] daannii@lemmy.world 29 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I mean as long as it's applied universally, I'm not completely against banning flags of other nations.

The problem is when the Israel flag is allowed yet the Palestinians flag isn't.

[–] SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca 18 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I think the problem is just having weird laws against freedom of speech, but that's just me.

[–] daannii@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I mean. Banning other flags in specific places seems like it could be appropriately applied but also potentially abused.

Not sure there is a right answer. I share your concerns with censorship. It never stops with one thing.

[–] anzo@programming.dev 3 points 3 days ago

Singapore recognized the Palestine nation?! /S

[–] drmoose@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago

Why do you love Singpore? Genuinely asking as someone who visits the place at least once a year.

[–] Malyca@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 days ago

Saw their show the other night in Korea where they showed the same flag. The whole show was epic and laid out a lot of uncomfortable truths. The whole show is here for anyone interested: https://youtu.be/mW_c909VqVU

I haven't listened to to that song since I started listening to Cocteau Twins. Didn't even realize Elizabeth Fraser was on it, makes sense in retrospect.

[–] blackbeans@lemmy.zip 35 points 4 days ago

Massive attack is awesome, such a great experience to see their show. Much better than you would expect from a 35+ year old band.

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 34 points 4 days ago (7 children)

But I bet it would been totally cool if they flew an israeli flag.

[–] decolo@piefed.social 27 points 4 days ago

When publicly stating alignment with Israel or Palestine, you have to choose if you want to be hated by the government, or the actual people on the street.

[–] halcyoncmdr@piefed.social 14 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

Possibly, but unlikely.

Singapore has a lot of very strict laws, and they apply them rigorously. Famously their drug possession laws have a ton of prison time, and often the death penalty for trafficking.

From the article, it is a very narrow but all encompassing law, originally passed in 1949 and the last update in 2021 predates the most recent conflict...

The decision is tied to Singapore’s policies on public speech, which prohibit publicly displaying foreign national emblems without a permit or exemption.

Singapore has always given me the creeps because of the whole conscription thing. This just feels indicative of that underlying rot.

[–] drmoose@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago

I visit Singapore quite often and it's dystopian despite all the pretty parks and malls. The thing is it's dystopian but boring so people don't really notice it. The entire "country" is a tax and school haven for Asian billionaires, there's absolutely nothing else there.

[–] RIotingPacifist@lemmy.world 14 points 3 days ago

They've only had 1 party rule, it's technically a democracy but it's as rigged as it can be without crossing the line into actual rigging.

[–] Akasazh@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

It's ironic as they fail to comdemn truely massive attacks on civilians
