Who is this for?
I was interested but reading the article quickly ended that.
People who can't fathom a Ford lasting more than 4 years.
If you buy one you can give it to anyone or keep it for yourself. You decide.
The release? Seemingly mostly for the Ford marketing folks that think the customers care more about what they name a car and pictures of random people doing stuff more than any actual actionable information about the vehicle.
A small-ish electric pickup? People who wanted cheaper and/or smaller than the current wave of EV pickups. Especially a lot of folks that installed EVSE in their garage for their cars and full-size pickups frequently don't fit in garages.
Slate is in the same area and has quite a bit of interest, despite being yet another unproven manufacturer. Depending on the details of the truck, this could take advantage of the same niche but with a more familiar brand and potentially executing some things better when it comes to truck features. One issue I recall with a colleague's Tesla was that they got a lot of the 'boring car stuff' wrong, and I wouldn't be surprised if Slate makes some similar mistakes. Particularly I suspect Ford will get the two-row seating/serviceable bed compromise down better than Slate. Though Ford could still flub the size and not fit in my garage while absolutely a Slate could, will have to see. I wish Ford would embrace the "maker" sensibilities that Slate seems to cater towards but they will absolutely fail at that.
People that couldn't afford the $100k Ford Lightning.
They were well under $50K at one point.
I moved to a different state in 2023 and needed a new vehicle, and using CarMax, the gently used base model lightnings with cloth seats were going for $80k+. Want extended range and an upgraded trim? Yeah, that's $100k or more. Good luck buying a new one. I'm sure the MSRP was probably $50k, but you'd never actually find one for that price. Expectations meet reality.
I just want a kei car, or functional public transportation, or sidewalks with trees over them.
I think I'm honestly going to do with an ebike. Car prices have gotten insane lately. I no longer travel across the country for work, and it's just me so I think I could manage regular small trips to the grocery store and back on a bike that I didn't have to do all the work to propel.
There are quite a few decent options for a cargo e-bike for around $1200
That ford CEO is consistently on the wrong side of everything. Not a chance. Not even if you threw in the upgraded aerodynamic cup holders
Well, could be worse. Could be BMW or GM leadership... At least the seats won't be by subscription and at least it will bother to support Carplay/Android auto...
Yeah, I'm staying the fuck away from Ford or at least the next 5 years. They outsourced all of their design shit to AI and then had to higher engineers back.

You dont need it on ICE either.
I hate how bad the visibility is in new cars. Tiny windows. Massive hoods. Huge blindspots.
They probably have a frunk up there. But they could have sacrificed a cubic foot and sloped it down for safety and efficiency.
Pickup buyers want intimidating asshole designs.
Especially since the sole reason for that bullshit is skirting fuel mileage requirements.

Of course it's a pickup. Average American never leaves his house without a fridge after all.
I'd get far more use out of a pickup bed than I do the back seats of my sedan. I have to borrow my dad's truck 4-5 times a month. I haven't opened the back doors on my car probably since may, and that was just to clean it. If a decent manufacturer made a small pickup with a single cab and a full bed I'd buy it in heartbeat. Unfortunately all we get now are these little shits with 4 foot beds and seating for 5.
I know, that's what I said. Everyone in America is constantly moving heavy loads. That's why all new EVs are pickups (Cybercrap, Rivian, Slate and now this). If a car maker releases something that's not a pickup truck they immediately lose most of the market because pretty much everyone needs a pickup. Because they move heavy stuff. All the time.
Not all the time, and it's mostly just big stuff. I need a vehicle to primarily commute in that can haul tools and furniture around a few times a month or take kayaks and shit to the river. An EV pickup the size of the old S-10 I had would be perfect. Instead we get all the giant trucks with full beds or little ones with no bed but seating for a family of 4 and their dog. There's no middle ground. There's plenty of EVs already that are not pickups. How many variations do you need?
If the pickup is at a lower height, less ostentatious/dangerous grill, and shorter than 200 inches, I won't begrudge someone a pickup compared to an SUV.
They used to make em like this. 90s/00s Ford Rangers, Mazda B-Series, Chevy S10s, Toyota Tacomas are all reasonably-sized compact pickups that can still fit 4x8 sheet goods in the bed and have plenty of hauling power for a homeowner that does frequent house projects. If they brought that form factor back but made it electric, I'd buy one in a heartbeat.
Yeah, the Maverick misses the mark by being roughly the right size, but a teeny-tiny bed for the sake of the crew cab. A car that begrudgingly has a token bed. People have gotten surprisingly good use out of the tiny bed and going to all manners of awkward tailgate-down shenigans to carry things that don't fit, but it's awkward.
The "more passenger space than a RAV4" makes it clear they are going to have an even bigger cab than a maverick, so that's a worrying sign. However, since they seem to also be obsessed with "you can fit your surfboards in the bed", then they may have at least done a mid-gate, and that could get me the sort of truck experience I'd need, with the compromise of being open to the weather to get full bed length. Might suck for trying to haul stuff into super dusty worksites where you'd probably not want to be open to the elements too long, but for me that might be an acceptable compromise (I do have to carry enough passengers to usually need the passenger space, and on the occasion I need to carry something long, I generally have a nice day of weather and don't go anywhere too filthy). Would be better than my current situation where I have to rent a trailer anytime I want to do anything mildly significant to tow with an SUV.
Won't find any of these under $40k at any dealer
