apparently, makeup used to be not something you're supposed to see / inappropriate for women to wear. Prior to the 1920's makeup had to be the "natural" type. During this time the makeup industry exploded and the dark, sultry eyes and bright red lips became a trend. Makeup trends have fluctuated throughout the century.
personally my favorite is the 60s, but every decade has had some interesting trends. Pastel colored hair dye for example became popular in the 50s, when it was still a common trend to require a bouffant hairstyle before leaving the house.
