I was one of the people who they actually unbanned because the bot wrongfully banned it. But because I used a second account during the wrongful ban, again cannot underemphasize so wrong that they admitted it was wrong, it perma banned all of my accounts.
Ask Lemmy
A Fediverse community for open-ended, thought provoking questions
Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, toxicity and dog-whistling are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either !asklemmyafterdark@lemmy.world or !asklemmynsfw@lemmynsfw.com.
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email info@lemmy.world. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
6) No US Politics.
Please don't post about current US Politics. If you need to do this, try !politicaldiscussion@lemmy.world or !uspolitics@lemmy.world
7) No Hit-and-Run questions.
Please don't delete your post for no apparent reason. If you plan on deleting a question later, say so in the post, or if you feel that you have a good reason to remove it, message a mod beforehand. It's not fair to the ones who took their time to answer, and it's not in the spirit of the community.
8) No Bots.
Posts or comments from bots, LLM's, AIs, Neural Networks, Transformers, or Marvin the Paranoid Android are not welcome in AskLemmy. Real humans only please.
Reminder: The terms of service apply here too.

I have a similar story. I was banned, then "unbanned" (as in I got a notification apologizing + stating I was unbanned) but then they never actually lifted the ban
Ive been shadow banned for talking about maker stuff before. Multiple times. It trips their algorithm because it looks like hacks.
I used to use the api to recommend other subreddits based on other subreddits. That lasted for years until that day.
I contributed to better reddit back in the day.
And then the lost me. They dont care I get it. But because of that the fediverse is nipping at their heels. And I'm staying.
I posted to the DnD 5e subreddit about a contradiction in the rules between how elementals and demons are summoned, suggesting that someone can summon a demon who can summon their own demon and so on, forever. Rules as Written allowed it and Rules as Intended also seemed to allow it given summoning elementals explicitly restricted doing summoning lesser elementals all the way down.
Anyway I got about to about 50 downvotes because I said I would allow a player to summon a demon who could summon a demon (who could potentially summon another demon) because, well, DnD. Fuck me I guess.
In the case of demons they usually have a "roll to disobey" clause. If someone wants to summon a room full of demons go for it, everyone will probably end up dead.
Plus if someone really abused it you can have some demon lord hunt them down and cause even more problems.
I moderated a large sub that participated in the blackout. Our mod team was threatened by the admins into reopening, and that's when I knew I was done with the platform.
There's a blocked user cap of 1000.
It's not enough.
This happened years ago before most of the big reddit controversies popped off and before words like incel and red pill were coined. There used to be a medium sized community called /r/foreveralone. It was mostly a community for people who were romantically alone and provided support and semi-edgy memes about it. Mostly though it was a support group by the time I found it. It was a decent community then full of lonely people who mostly encouraged each other and tried to help each other overcome those mental blocks we all set up that keep us from what we want.
Over time though new users started to migrate into the sub offering a different kind of support. They would claim that women were to blame for their lonely state and their rhetoric became increasingly aggrieved and violent. Around this same time /r/redpill was coming into it's prime and sucking many users down a very dark path. The /r/foreveralone community fractured and a schism created two groups within the community, those that wanted it to remain mutual support and chuds that wanted more red pilled content. Unfortunately the chuds won.
Despite many efforts my members of the community and mods to combat the problem nothing worked. I know many users also reached out to the reddit admins for help, but they chose to do nothing. After unmasking who knows how many chuds posting for support only to try to manipulate the community I left and moved on with my life. But it wasn't until months or years later (I can't remember the exact timeline) that the reddit admins squashed /r/redpill and helped the /r/foreveralone community recover their subreddit, but even now it's still fairly poisonous.
Like Facebook and X after them, reddit had a choice to keep the community free of knuckle dragging chuds, but chose not to for some vaguely defined, free speech ideal. That's why reddit sucks.
It's always bothered me how incel's are discussed when really, the group they are referencing are often sexually active but just deeply misogynistic. Meanwhile many people who are closer to the 'forever alone' crowd deserve genuine sympathy. Being lonely sucks, and being unable to 'obtain' a partner is lonely.
Beyond that - some people will just throw out 'incel' as a catch all for "took issue with any pro-woman or pro-lgbt statement".
Yeah, incel today has more angry loner vibes than anything. It was never a really good term though because involuntary celibate is not an accurate way to describe either the modern chuds or the older /r/foreveralone community members. It's got misogyny baked right in because it externalizes the cause of isolation when in most cases those folks are their own worst enemy when it comes to dating.
The /r/foreveralone community had a somewhat derogatory term to describe it, terminally special. So many of the people who would come to the community looking for help or support would receive pretty excellent and sometimes very personalized advise and do nothing but explain how their specific circumstances meant they couldn't use dating apps or join a group around a hobby or whatever. They preferred to remain isolated rather than leave their comfort zone and where experts at making excuses.
Those folks are one of the reasons the red pill message was so successful in the community. It didn't require them to change anything about how they were approaching dating. It's picky women or alpha males or whatever and never themselves.
can we not be like every earlier "reddit alternative" that just talks about reddit? i remember the shitstorm that was voat.
i didn't join because of reddit, i joined because i like the threaded conversation model.
I liked voat the first month or so. Then the....banned people came to it. So eww...
not interesting, but I got permabanned for ban evasion. I got caught up in the mod meltdown in r/conspiracy after the 2020 election because it was fucking hilarious. still the best popcorn episode that I have ever witnessed. got banned for pissing off axolotl. I used to have a separate account on each device I used because I don't know, it was just a thing that I did. I was on another device a day or so later and went back and I must have said something similar enough to get reported for evasion. that was it. over the next few days all of the old accounts I had were instantly banned at login. any new accounts that I tried to make were shadowbanned. a while later I found a couple of very old accounts that I was able to keep going by blocking all the conservative subs that I used to argue with people in, until one day I must have slipped up and said something "wrong" because those accounts were shadowbanned too. this was conveniently a short time before the API lockdown, so I just came over here and haven't gone back except when someone links over there.
I was on another device a day or so later and went back and I must have said something similar enough to get reported for evasion.
IP tracking too. It really annoys me that reddit insinuates it can "just tell" it's you based on similar language usage, because:
- if they can, that's still a fucking stupid and evil thing to do (invasion of privacy, drives userbase down, means punitive justice of bans isn't worthwhile because people don't get an opportunity to learn from, their mistake and thus not better culture is enforced following the event - the people left using reddit are cruel people who "get away with it" in some way.)
- if they can't, they're using nasty tracking tools and misleading the public about them.
I suppose they match the communities followed, so maybe you just followed the same set, in the same order - perhaps to make up for losing one account, you added all of its subreddits in the same order as "most-visited" among them.
I'm just not buying across millions of users, there exists a combination of ethical pattern matching (e.g. subs, comment patterns, online timing, etc). to reliably identify a single human behind multiple accounts. We're not that unique.
It's 100% IP and cookie based. Each of which can be circumvented without too much issue.
Browser fingerprinting however is not easy to circumvent.
There's a couple of extensions for that. But yeah its usually not easy.
I don't really think that Reddit sucks. But it's not the best option out there for me any more, which is why I'm here instead. I'd rather be using an open-source, distributed system with a variety of clients.
What? An innocent, new baby??
Sus. We're going to watch you.

Reddit is owned by US American Big Tech; that’s enough reason.
uhg why.
move on. it ded
Made an account here on Lemmy in 2023 after the API stuff.
Then, a year later I got permbanned on reddit for being mean to Nazis, talking shit about Elon Musk, and saying Hans Kristian Graebner (the Neo-Nazi who makes the Stonetoss comics) deserved to have his name leaked on the Internet.
New account was banned a year after that for evasion.
Said fuck it, stopped using reddit and started being active here instead.
Once, it was a shining example to the world of how cool Lisp was, and it had absolutely no inane comments. Then they rewrote it in Python.
I remember the days of it having a plethora of subs with shitty graphics that were decicated to abusing women including 2 literally named 'beatwomen' subs and a sub where they would post pictures of women crying for dudes who got hard for that stuff.
it was all defended as 'free speech' and guys who called this 'blowing off steam'
cp subs were plenty. and defended with the same defenses mentioned above. pedo apologists as far as the eye could see.
I've hated it since it's conception.
reminds me of how bitcoin was invented by pedos to disguise their transactions: the worst inspiration for successful tech.
we as a species really need to be inspired by something better than this violence trope.
I just closed down the communities I moderated and nuked my entire account afterwards when the API ban was announced. I never looked back.
I've been on reddit for 13 or 14 years I think, had my own subreddit dedicated to my cats, then they closed the API and I couldn't use the free and add-free app anymore to manage it.
I was banned in one sub for pointing out how heavy-handed the mods were being about pedantic shit. They are basement-dwelling asshats.
I was on my regional sub Reddit and it turned right-wing real quick. Heard of Lemmy, decide to check it out, after 2-3 months I saw that I was more on Lemmy than Reddit so I deleted it.
In the background the API shit and their opening in the Market was happening so it probably help me to go
I got banned from my state sub by a mod who didn't live here. Dipshit was a mod on nearly thirty subs. Turns out he/she/it was a right wing shill. That came out in the drama right before I jumped ship and came to lemmy full time.
It kept throwing subs for Israeli pigs at me, for one.
That and shitty sports that I kept blocking, but it randomly decided the block list didnt exist.
Pointing out that 3/4 of the posts are old junk from karma whores or even suggesting something is AI generated gets you downvoted to oblivion and people calling you anything but nice.
I quit with the API bullshit but I first started realizing Reddit sucked when an admin threatened to ban me after I reported a fascist troll running a bunch of sockpuppets. The troll I guess was friends with a mod who was friends with this admin, I don't really know what the deal was but the result was they got me in trouble for abusing moderation. I kept reporting the troll and their accounts eventually got nuked by Reddit a few weeks later, I was never banned or contacted by an admin again.
I was permabanned for reporting an unironic 'kill all men' post.
Deleted?
Thanks for that, it turns out Mwmbl is my new favourite search engine 🙂
I saw one too many questions asking what I thought about Andrew Tate, I said that I'd murder him if I could, a couple hours later I got a notification that said I was permabanned.
I was churning accounts because I'd get preemptively banned by some subs just for posting in other subs, then I'd post in one accidentally not remembering the preemptive ban and all the accounts get permabanned for "ban evasion", it's too much work. What're ya gonna do? Make a separate email AND account for each subbreddit to prevent that?
Then they remove old reddit for everyone without an old account.
Many of the subs are gone anyway. /r/random mostly ends up on dead subs, and all the users of years ago are gone, seemingly also due to account churn.
The fact that Reddit allowed for the 'ban users if they comment in another sub' thing to exist is another sign that owners have lost their fucking minds.
It's literally just a mechanism for the mega-subs to suppress smaller subs from growing. Why on earth would Reddit go out of their way to introduce monopolies.
People started doing that shortly after the addition of user-created subreddits. At first, it was usually for participating in comically horrible subreddits which have surely been banned by now.
Logged on to my account while on VPN. They suspended my account and the only way to recover it is through email verification. I didn’t use an email when I created that account a long time ago.
I was drowning in rage bait engagement bait and just generally bait everywhere. Felt like a fish.
Lemmy feels like the open ocean in comparison. I can choose where to go and what to do. It's a lot emptier in comparison, but that's not necessarily worse than hooks everywhere trying to hack your brain.
Initially came over during the API protests. But my Reddit is Shit angry blab right now is that I can't fucking read comments anymore when just randomly searching things on my phone because there's a pop-up that you can't close that makes it impossible to read more.
I've tried clearing my cache and it seems to come back faster and faster every time. I also flip over to the desktop site instead of mobile to keep reading - but that's a pain in the arse.
So yeah. Greedy bastards are just smashing the 'get our app' banner in your face and blocking everything else. Fuck em
I use uBlock origin to remove that pop-up, 4 taps and it's gone. Just make sure to tap the upper part of the page when selecting what to block, otherwise you won't be able to scroll down.
