We are decentralized, according to FediDB, the Fediverse has 14.2 million accounts. Lemmy+Piefed+Mbin have 551k users. Obviously we could be better spread out, but the fact that there's no instance at 50% share is already pretty nice.
And if a big instance enshittified, it would be drastically easier for everyone to leave it compared to convincing people to leave Reddit or something. You just export/import your user settings and you get to keep the communities you've subscribed to and block, and the users you've blocked.
No. The idea is to have the constant looming threat of decentralization to keep the centralized system in check.
Mutually assured enshittification
Precisely! What's the point of an overpopulated instance? It's more likely to affect users because of blanket instance blocklists.

I'm part of discuss.tchncs.de, more or less by accident. I just stumbled across that one when I wanted to make an account.
I came here after lemmy.ml said it was shutting down. Idk what happened a with that but world seemed stable enough to not have that problem
.ml shutting down? That's the devs server unlikely it will shut down unless for maintenence
the instance I was on straight up, said that it was shutting down, and that we should migrate to other instances. I did that and dropped the other account so I have no fucking clue what's going on over there.
actual question: How is Lemmy.ml functionally different than Lemmy.world?
ML was run by the Lemmy frontend maintainers who drain the blood of puppies for sustenance and wish to kill you slowly and painfully as a source of income.
.ml has a lot of pro-Russia, pro-China types and criticism of either country can lead to a quick ban.
Functionally, there is no difference. Both run the same software, tho the versions may slightly differ as the devs, who run .ml, push updates.
For a functionally different experience try Mbin/Kbin (I forget which is the current), or Piefed. Piefed is similar to Lemmy with some quality of life improvements. Kbin/Mbin is a cross between “tweet” style posts, “blog” style posts like tumblr, and Reddit type posts.
From my experience, people in .world are way more open to positive discussion than .ml. Everything upsets .ml if you say the wrong thing or dont post the right way, to make them understand. Its to much fucking drama for no reason.
All those users are from different instances. That's decentralized.
If this community goes down or is otherwise not viable anymore, users can easily find another, similar community, while not having to switch to a different platform or instance or whatever themselves. That's how this is supposed to work.
Decentralization with different larger communities on different instances, with community members from all kinds of different instances, baby!
It only works if you can bring your block list with you. That's the only thing of value attached to my profile.
You can, it's easy and quick. I just exported my profile settings (builtin to the default lemmy.world web UI) to a json file in a couple seconds. Confirmed it contains blocked users and communities.
Well thank god for that!
For real, do they want the Fediverse to turn into a shitshow like email?
it’s almost inevitable, no one cares about decentralisation
Decentralized networks with large centralized communities is the best approach. You have to have that number of people to have interesting conversations and engagement.
But if all the users are spread out across several instances it becomes more resilient. If a large community/instance goes offline or there's a controversy then it can be migrated to a new instance
It's good to have it as an option but most people are frustrated if they can't just go to one place that has tons of people.
Well thats sad.
16,666 dozen
See? Dozens of us! Dozens!
I like being grouped in 12s lol
Dozens of dozens of dozens of dozen
Only 9.66 dozens of dozen of dozen
I convinced a few of my friends to leave reddit and move onto to here. I'M DOING MY PART!
Should have chosen Piefed.

Defederated from .ml and watch those number go even higher.
I can now say I've officially joined the .world party, after the craziness from my last post getting deleted, im officially done with them. i might even delete all my other post i did in .ml, those guys are fucking ridiculous for no reason.
.world supports .ml, so…. There’s that.
Even so, my interactions there are way better than .ml. ill take that anyday
Let's go Lemmy! It's nice to see this platform grow. Whether by taking in people from corpo social media platforms or just by people discovering that it's actually a safe neat little place to exist.
Keep the Lemmings coming please 💜
Lemmy kind of maintained by really really really terrible people, though. Better off on a different fediverse frontend.
I'm a recent convert. Got banned by Reddit mods, like globally for an anti ICE comment. I called them brownshirts.
Reddit.world
Thanks for engaging!
High scores are neat; but we all realize that's effectively just trainspotting, right? Popularity just means popularity, and laundering that out to some notion of good/effective/accurate/respected is neither good nor healthy ; right?
Still, grats on having a higher number.
Nah.
If you view corporate social media like fb/twitter/reddit as a morally wrong + negative influence on society, then this is a moral win thus worth celebrating.
Especially when you add in that the main barrier to any social media product gaining traction is first hitting that critical mass of enough posts to make it worth returning to -> habit forming + habit replacing.
Can someone connected with Anonymous see if they can get some AI to do a Hugging Bear style DDoS attack on u/Spez? We should Ol' Yeller Reddit. It's for the best really.
