Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media. Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the primary mod account @EuroMod@feddit.org

Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir announced that he will raise annexing the West Bank at the next cabinet meeting in response to the the recognitions.

“The recognition by the UK, Canada, and Australia of a ‘Palestinian’ state, as a prize for the murderous Nukhba terrorists, requires immediate countermeasures,” said Ben-Gvir.

I don't even know how to comment this.

Israel's terrorism needs to be stopped, along with its genocide.

They are trying to make opposition feel hopeless, but the truth is their continued aggression is totally reliant on foreign support.

An exasperated sigh as reality plays out exactly like expected

[–] mgnome@piefed.social 18 points 1 week ago

Would be good to see any following of that though.

Because as of now - Palestinian state is basically a virtual entity, and unless Israel will be forced to retreat and international peacekeeping contingent will have its boots on the ground in Gaza - it's all just empty talk while people are getting murdered.

Better late than never, Keir. Good on the current UK government for not riding out the September deadline to the very end, though. I'll take the silver linings where I can find them these days. The joint statement is good too, lends more weight.

Not so good on equating criticizing Israel with terrorism. Or supporting disallowing protesters from being able to testify as to their motivations for breaking a law. Or for charging people with decades in prison for climate and environmental actions good and starmer cannot be used in the same sentence honestly. He's a cynical piece of shit.

Meanwhile, not letting an Irish punk bad tour Canada because they support Free Palestine

From the river to the sea there will be democracy, human rights, and equal political rights for people of all ethnicities and confessions.

Worthless thanks for nothing you hacks. We need all new leadership clearly. Hacks being polits doing a symbolic gesture 2 years into a genocide.

[–] PlantDadManGuy@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Oh thank God, I'm sure the three remaining Palestinians will be so relieved.

I don't understand the UK weren't they doing censorship against Palestine?

[–] FlyingCircus@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

They’re probably doing it because they know that Israel will never agree to a 2-state solution. The UK Labor Party can tell their former constituents that actually they aren’t pro-genocide and please support us again pretty please, all without doing anything that would significantly disrupt Israel.

It’s a way of appearing to be on the right side of history, while also knowing that they’ll never have to put their money where their mouth is.

Yeah its...its strange

[–] GenosseFlosse@feddit.org 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Wow, a bit shocking to see UK on a list when it comes to making the right moral choice.

[–] hera@feddit.uk 4 points 1 week ago (2 children)

It might be the right moral decision but was it done for the right reason? The conspiracy theorist in me thinks that the timing of this straight after the Donald Trump state visit to the UK cannot be coincidental, Trump must have Okayed this and there must be a bigger plan. Maybe. Ha.

[–] Skua@kbin.earth 2 points 1 week ago

I honestly don't care about the motivations right now if it does literally anything to help. If the reasoning was shitty then let's deal with that later

[–] silasmariner@programming.dev 1 points 1 week ago

It's been Labour policy for over a decade that Palestine should be recognised, but that was in conflict with a governmental position that only states that 'exist' in some stable sense could be recognised. The balance tipped, I guess, and now the former outweighs the latter. Don't think it's quite as suss as made out.

As a traitor to the US, I accept Palestine as a nation.
