Abstract:

Over the past 5 to 7 million years, humans and chimpanzees have diverged in brain size, structure, and cognition despite high conservation of protein-coding genes. However, retroviral infections within host genomes have introduced numerous species-specific regulatory elements. Chimpanzees harbor lineage-specific PTERV1 endogenous retroviruses that are absent in humans, but their role in brain evolution has remained unclear. We performed an epigenomic analysis of PTERV1 insertions in chimpanzee neural organoids and found they are heavily DNA methylated, forming over 150 species-specific heterochromatin domains with the potential to influence gene regulation. We identified a chimpanzee-specific insertion on chromosome 19 that silences the long noncoding RNA LINC00662 through DNA methylation spreading. CRISPR-mediated deletion of this PTERV1 restored LINC00662 expression in chimpanzee induced pluripotent stem cells. We show that LINC00662, a human-specific transcript expressed during brain development, plays a role in neuronal maturation, axon outgrowth, and neural organoid development. These findings reveal a mechanism by which endogenous retroviral insertions contributed to human-chimpanzee brain divergence.

There's a couple of reasons. It's easy to learn, especially in comparison with what came before (I still have nightmares about CGI). If you already had HTML locked down, it's wasn't a big jump to coding PHP, whereas Javascript was less noob friendly. This meant that a lot of opensource web content management systems got built first on PHP. Wordpress has been mentioned, but that's ignoring the larger structural CMS systems like Joomla and Drupal.

At the time these projects were really hitting their stride (2005 - 2010), opensource systems built on a LAMP architecture were out-competing any proprietary language of similar capacity. The only one that came close to PHP's use was ASP and that was just because it had Microslop behind it. By 2010, PHP had pretty much dominated the existing opensource CMS community, which in turn meant most non-commercial websites and a fair chunk of commercial ones as well had their core interfaces written in PHP.

Does it have flaws? Absofuckinglutely. But it was the first widespread web programming language that was free, easy to learn, and worked well over 80% of the time across all browsers. Nothing since has really hit that sweet spot of being the right software for the right problem at exactly the right time, which is why its still in heavy use today.

I wouldn't. I'd let the community decide via voting. You don't engender discussion by silencing speakers because they don't meet your requirements of legitimacy. If there's a question of legitimacy or bad faith discussion, identify it, talk about it, and downvote the hell out of it if needed.

But don't remove it. Once you do, you're no longer curating a discussion. You're promoting an agenda.

Rejecting a voice out of hand because of whom its coming from is blatant censorship, and a tacit admission that your ideas can't compete with theirs in the arena of public discourse.
