You could also re-label this meme by saying the one on the left is someone who reads books and the one on the right is someone who only ever reads chat apps.

With lots of looking away, then glancing sideways, then looking away and blushing, and mewling like eeeeh, eto, kyaaa, and tapping her pointing fingers together

Omg yes. I’ve been playing FF7 Remake trilogy and I’m pretty sure I’ve contracted some degenerative disease just listening to the dialogue.

What the FUCK is the problem here? Why can’t they talk in sentences? Is it the Japanese writers or the translators infantilizing Japanese writers? One of these need to get shot.

[–] Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 4 days ago

Regular FF7’s dialogue was pretty to-the-point, and many of the characters’ dialogue comes off as very dry/terse. I’ve never played the remake, and don’t think I wanna.

It's both parts infuriating and hilarious that Toby fox refuses to hire more localization teams because he's afraid of them corrupting his "superior writing with such nuance"

no Mr. fox you make tumblr sexymen and fandom communities you are not writing the bible. Undertale is still not translated into more languages despite being more than a decade old.

He simultaneously manages to be the least serious and most serious writer.

"The whole vison is compromised if the word pipis is mistranslated!"

Ngl, this is one of the reasons keeping me away from playing their games. Am I curious? Absolutely! Do I want to go through an entire game with that style of dialogue? Hell no.

[–] Dort_Owl@hexbear.net 6 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Naah it's not always like that and I'm exaggerating.

The games are good and not very long if you ever want to find out. Besides even if sometimes the dialogue goes into this territory, it's only in certain moments.

99% of the dialogue is more silly antics. If you've ever played a Mother game you'll know what to expect. Absurdist comedy followed by the occasional emotional stab in the heart.

I make fun of Toby Fox (out of love mostly, he is extremely tumblr in the best and worst ways), but his games are legitimately some of my favourites ever made, and this is coming from someone who has played way too many games.

do Japanese people actually talk like that, or is the dialogue broken up like that to have it take up the entire manga page's layout?

[–] purpleworm@hexbear.net 23 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

A lot of it is literally just Japanese having different grammar and English translations historically being bad, and sometimes trying to account for the former by contorting the translated sentence as far as possible in English so that it begins or ends with the same word (etc.) as in Japanese because of the formatting of the text in the case of manga.

Also being overly-literal with how something is formulated in Japanese when the speaker is just speaking in a normal idiomatic way and so it would generally be better to make it idiomatic English, though that of course relates to bad translation in general.

Also also some things are just hard to translate in a way that sounds like actual English, stereotypical examples including honorifics and personal pronouns.

[–] CthulhusIntern@hexbear.net 25 points 4 days ago

I wonder if it has to do with Japanese acting being inspired by kabuki theater, and it would be like English dialogue all being in iambic pentameter, because English writers still keeping the format of Shakespeare?

do Japanese people actually talk like that

The answer to this actually ties into why the Japanese have such a reputation for toxic work culture. You might have heard about long hours at Japanese workplaces. The real reason for this is communication. For example, if the boss means to say ‘Hey Shinji, please write this report for me by 3:30 pm on Tuesday’, it will usually go

‘Hey Shinji…’

‘Yes?’

‘Could you…unless…’

‘Uhhh what?’

‘Write this report?’

‘Ok’

blush ‘by 3:30?’

‘Wtf there’s barely enough time wtf’

‘Oh, is that a problem?’

whips out gun and points at own head ‘I can’t!!’

‘Oh…could it be done by tuesday?’

collapses

5 hours from now, the employee has recovered from the unnecessary dialogue and is working on the assignment till 11:00 pm

Remove the emotes and it's your average AmeriKKKan MS Teams exchange with a boomer who starts every conversation with "Are you there?" as if chat is a synchronous medium and they need to wait for the fucking dial tone before sending over a request

Edit: I say "boomer" here, but my worst offender -- who is the one guy that I have called out on it -- is like 28

[–] Sleve_McDichael@hexbear.net 14 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Absolutely love to get a Teams message that just says “Hi” with no follow up or context

And then a meeting request two hours later

[–] DoofusAscendant@hexbear.net 13 points 3 days ago

My boss is Canadian and does the same thing, minus the deadline:

"It would be nice if X...."
"So do you want me to do X?"
"Let's circle back later and see if we have time."
Later:
"Hey, why isn't X done?"

omori-furious

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 10 points 3 days ago

I am mashing the A button in my mind right now to skip the bad dialogue.

[–] buckykat@hexbear.net 14 points 3 days ago

Dialogue isn't actually written the way people talk. It's pretty much always smoother and cleverer

[–] Abracadaniel@hexbear.net 16 points 4 days ago (1 children)

It's how they think English speakers talk so they're just doing good translation.

[–] Lussy@hexbear.net 15 points 4 days ago

‘American slow and stupid, no? Must show respect to their culture’

[–] Parzivus@hexbear.net 12 points 3 days ago

English translations of anime/manga don't sound like everyday language because the original text doesn't sound like everyday language either. No one on Earth actually talks like a Jojo's character

[–] morrowind@lemmy.ml 7 points 3 days ago

I talk like this and so do most people I know. Do you people never pause in speech?

[–] TUMBLE_BUS@hexbear.net 21 points 3 days ago

Gotta put more gasps and sighs in there.

[–] kleeon@hexbear.net 27 points 4 days ago

Ugh... It's not like I like you or anything!

[–] WokePalpatine@hexbear.net 19 points 4 days ago

Synthesize it.

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 11 points 3 days ago

I've got a friend from Japan and when she went back to visit her mom a while back and hated how long it took people to get to the point. She's super blunt

[–] hello_hello@hexbear.net 8 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Right side reads better btw

[–] Parzivus@hexbear.net 7 points 3 days ago

Also you would not believe how much some Japanese writers love their ellipses, this image is underselling it

[–] Jentu@lemmy.ml 4 points 3 days ago

Needs more internal monologue
