We kind of split it but when doing a grocery delivery subscription like hellofresh for a few weeks, I cook most of it because I find following the baby step instructions less tedious

[–] Nemo@slrpnk.net 54 points 3 days ago (1 children)

She's not a morning person, so I cook breakfast and do all the baking.

She used to be a professional chef, so she cooks dinner most nights.

The kids each have one or two dishes they can prepare for lunch to feed each other.

The cats are useless layabouts and don't even bring us hunting trophies anymore.

[–] Noodle07@lemmy.world 27 points 3 days ago

Freaking cats not even paying rent

[–] FreedomAdvocate 3 points 1 day ago

Usually whoever isn't busy with the kids at the time.

[–] grasshopper_mouse@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

I do the cooking because I enjoy it and am halfway decent at it, he does all the dishes. It's a fair trade for both of us, since he hates cooking and I'm not a fan of doing dishes.

[–] JakenVeina@midwest.social 3 points 1 day ago

My wife on weekdays, me on weekends/holidays/any days I don't work.

[–] IWW4@lemmy.zip 32 points 3 days ago

It is just my wife and I. We will alternate the cooking, every other day. Who ever doesn’t cook, does the clean up.

The realistic answer

[–] Skyline969@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 days ago

Most of the time my gf does the cooking. I’m the primary breadwinner, plus she loves to cook. I do too, but she does more. I do other stuff around the house - clean up after the cats, clean floors, take out garbage - but cooking is her deal.

[–] Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 days ago

Usually my mother but I like to volunteer as to learn and expan my skills

[–] EponymousBosh@awful.systems 21 points 3 days ago

I do the cooking. It's not like my wife is incapable, she's just the breadwinner and it's more fair for me to do most of the house stuff.

[–] Tja@programming.dev 3 points 2 days ago

I do it at least 6 days of the week, I have a very intense problem-solving job and cooking something following a recipe helps me relax and blank my mind a bit.

[–] peaches@sh.itjust.works 10 points 2 days ago

Mostly I do the cooking because I love it, I am very fast doing it, I am very good at it and I like us to have healthy food in the house. He does some specific dishes that I don’t feel like doing. I made the rule of whoever does the cooking, also cleans up. It is strange at first glance, but I clean while I cook, so I don’t have to clean a bunch of stuff at the end. And he is a messy cook. So I don’t get in the kitchen while he cooks, otherwise I would get mad with the lack of efficiency.

And he loves my food much more than I do. It is a pleasure to see him enjoy what I cook.

[–] Hugin@lemmy.world 10 points 2 days ago

I cook about 1/3 of the time my wife about a 1/3 of the time and both of us together about 1/3 of the time. We are both very good cooks but have different strengths.

I'm better when I plan ahead equilibrium brines, sousvide, smoking, Indian currie etc. She can look at what's in the fridge and whip up something good at short notice.

Together is usually each of us working on a different dish or me doing Mise en place for her.

[–] blackbarn@lemmy.zip 10 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I cook, I don't mind it. Wife doesn't like to. She does other things I prefer not to. A balance if you will.

Same here but reversed. I hate cooking, they love it. So I'm on dishes, it evens out.

[–] Bronzie@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 days ago

Same for us.
She hates cooking and it looks like a bomb went off when she's done. I hate doing laundry and it looks like a toddler folded the clothes when I'm done.
Cooking and cleaning probably takes more time per day, but we're both happy.

A win/win that has never been explicitly agreed to, just happened naturally.

[–] Kenny2999@lemmy.world 19 points 3 days ago

the microwave

[–] other_cat@lemmy.zip 14 points 2 days ago

I cook for myself usually. Husband is a picky eater and is willing to fend for himself (he generally does meal prep with the handful of things he likes for the week and heats stuff up.) If I am cooking something he does like I'll cook for us both.

[–] friend_of_satan@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago

The same person who did the cooking when I did live alone: not me.

[–] QuarterSwede@lemmy.world 17 points 3 days ago (1 children)

My wife mostly because she doesn’t work full time and she’s an incredible cook. When she doesn’t want to then I usually grill up something.

[–] redlemace@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

sounds familiar so it might have to do with Sweden then ;)

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

Generally, we each cook for ourselves unless someone is sick or it's an event or something, then I do the cooking.

[–] Professorozone@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

I'm (m) gluten free and my wife is vegetarian so we often just cook for ourselves. When both of us eat one thing, I cook probably 70% of the time. I'm the better cook.

Although we do have specific roles. I make all of the popcorn she makes all of the smoothies.

[–] neidu3@sh.itjust.works 9 points 2 days ago

Usually I. My GF is usually exhausted after work in the afternoon (while I have a pretty chill Wfh-situation going on), I don't mind it, I'm reasonably good at it, and I usually get to do it in peace.

In our house people know that if they're hanging in the kitchen while food prep is happening, they get assigned something to do, usually mostly so I get left alone.

[–] Lodespawn@aussie.zone 7 points 2 days ago

My wife and I take turns cooking. We typically plan everything out at the start of the week so can shift to one of us doing multiple nights in a row if need be. We started having whoever doesn't cook doing the cleaning, but my wife refuses to do basic cleanup as she goes so now whoever cooks also cleans up.

[–] redlemace@lemmy.world 11 points 3 days ago

Depends on work. And If we both work we cook together

[–] Jerb322@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

The one that gets home first.

[–] AmazingAwesomator@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

wife and i live together. she is an awful cook; i do all of the cooking and baking for everything.

i even make foods for her work functions, etc..

[–] earlgrey0@sh.itjust.works 9 points 3 days ago

Whom ever. It mostly depends on who has time. There is agreed upon meal plan so there’s a list of recipes we plan on going through during the week. We usually break out who does what based on skill and interest, then people will make snacks or in-between meals as needed.

[–] AceFuzzLord@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 days ago

Mostly my mother and I. It's almost certain my dad will complain about cooking taking more than 5 minutes and only sometimes helps ( only if my mom gets him to do it ). And my brother sometimes does it and sometimes helps, but more often than not I don't need his help.

I personally don't mind it since I don't hate doing it. And it's a pretty good life skill to have in general. None of us are professional chefs, but I imagine my mom and I could definitely outcook the average family in America anymore. Cooking is a dying art because of a combination of lack of convenience, laziness, grocery prices going up, and impatience, I swear.

Just me and my wife, I usually cook because I am by far the better cook. I cooked a lot growing up and did it professionally for years, she barely ever cooked at home until she moved in with me. I love her, but she has no sense of culinary coherence, she just kinda throws things that she likes into the pan without any consideration of how the flavors work together.

I'm fine with doing the cooking because I can just slip into the groove, and she doesn't mind it either.

If we want to eat today, then me. She's a good cook but very slow. I used to work in restaurants so my chopping speed is orders of magnitude faster than hers.

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 4 points 2 days ago

I work from home, and unless things are going a little crazy I do most of the cooking. Occasionally my wife will cover a lunch or breakfast or maybe even a dinner if things are crazy but it's probably one out of 10 times max.

She's pretty big into pre-packaged or just making a sandwich, I'll break out the baking soda flour and sugar and make pancakes, or if I think about it a couple hours early I'll make pizza dough or something I don't usually plan much past that. If I am using something pre-packaged I'll usually go out of my way to do something interesting with it. Make a buffalo sauce toss the nuggets in it throw them over a bag salad.

[–] Nomad@infosec.pub 4 points 2 days ago

Usually wife during the week, me on the weekend. Changes sometimes due to circumstances obviously.

[–] RBWells@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

I cook, my husband cleans up after. Because I am a good cook but not so good at cleaning. I do clean as I go, don't explode the kitchen or anything but there is always more and he does that.

If the kids (teen and 20 are the ones still at home) don't want what I make, they make their own food. All the kids cook better than my husband does - I remember when we were dating, his teenager asked if I could make mashed potatoes from potatoes for his birthday. But he got an Italian girlfriend and learned to cook too.

If I work late, I ask my husband to get us takeout and he does. On the odd occasion he cooks, I or the kids clean up.

[–] kinther@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

Depends on the night. When it is me I do some simple sautéed vegetables, a rice, and protein (tofu or meat). Sometimes I branch out and do pasta or casseroles.

[–] twinnie@feddit.uk 6 points 3 days ago

Anyone but me. I’ll do the laundry, the dishwasher, cleaning, gardening, driving, etc. I just hate cooking.

[–] bluesheep@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 days ago

I think it's around a 80/20 split between me and my gf. I just really like to cook.

[–] tiredofsametab@fedia.io 4 points 2 days ago

Mostly me for anything we share. We also just cook separately a lot as I tend to meal prep and eat the same thing every day.

[–] Brkdncr@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago

We both do.

[–] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

I cook 95 percent of the time. Husband can reheat or heat up a frozen thing, but not cook very well. Twin cooks dinner on Friday but sometimes just gets fast food for us. We also order more than we should. But if someone is cooking is probably me. And if it's baking its 100 percent me. Twin fucked up box brownies once and won't do more than boxes ever again.

[–] spankmonkey@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

We usually make our own things, like breakfast and lunches and whatnot. I like to cook peppers down to add to eggs and hash browns or to make breakfast burritos, and I'll try to make all kinds of things but end up being the only one who eats them. I also do lettuce prep for salads and whatnot.

If we make a multiple person home cooked meal then it depends on what we are having. I tend to get stuck with cooking meat ir pancakes as I enjoy making both, while my wife often makes nearly everything else because she is fairly picky but more forgiving if she was the one who made it. I often get to do sous chef stuff like chopping things.

She is the better overall cook, mostly because she has a better memory than I do for flavors. I literally cannot remember which spice is which and tend to stick to salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, or premixed spices with the names of the foods unless using a recipe. She is able to mix and match as she goes and does an excellent job!

[–] BlueEther@no.lastname.nz 3 points 2 days ago

Over winter when I'm home from work early and not doing 60 hours/week its split about 50/50. over summer I'll maybe cook once or twice a week.

When will the kids start to pull their weight in the kitchen?

[–] toomanypancakes@piefed.world 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I do all the cooking, he doesn't know how to prepare anything more complicated than sandwiches

[–] 200ok@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

Nothing tastes better than a sandwich made by someone who loves you

My partner and I love cooking together. Sometime only I will cook, sometime only she will cook bit 80% of the time we cook together or at least help each other

Whoever is home first/that day.

[–] Libb@piefed.social 3 points 3 days ago

My spouse and I.

We tend to split everything quite naturally between us two, but maybe it's because we have had quite some time to learn to do so? We're slowly getting close to 30 years living together.

That being said, I never do bakery/pastries because I don't like doing that (I just like to eat them) whereas she loves it. But I'll do all the laundry because she doesn't like doing it and I don't mind.
